Celebrating the Microphones Behind some of the Greatest Music in Recording History

"Every microphone is unique. Each one a beautiful and complex tool brought to life by legends of music and engineering. These are the portals through which some of the greatest music of all time has been created, quite literally, Out of Thin Air.

We proudly present,

The Abbey Road Studios Microphone Collection.”

- Isabel Garvey, Managing Director, Abbey Road Studios: December 2022

Abbey Road Studios, in partnership with photographer Rick Guest’s Legacy+Art collective, presents a photographic fine art series entitled ‘The Art of Recording’. This unique work documents and celebrates the material behind some of the music that has defined recorded music history and shaped popular culture.

The first project explores Abbey Road’s legendary microphone collection, used by artists from The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Shirley Bassey to Oasis, Kate Bush, Massive Attack, Little Simz, Amy Winehouse, Frank Ocean and Adele.

By using one fine art form to describe another, the artistic collective Legacy+Art has created hyper-detailed, large format artworks that reveal in incredible detail the microphones and their historical patina, as if every iconic recording artist and session has left behind its own visceral fingerprint.

“An elite collection created for versatility. Able to cover all three studios and accommodate such a wide variety of music and artists. It’s great to see many of the same mics still in use today.”

- Alan Parsons, Producer & Engineer: June 2023

“There is a tangible bond and intimacy between a singer and a microphone. For over 90 years Abbey Road has been home to some of the greatest recordings of all time with some of the greatest voices in history. From Glenn Miller to Ella Fitzgerald, The Beatles and Pink Floyd, this unique collection of photographs from Rick Guest’s Legacy+Art collective perfectly illustrates the role these extraordinary microphones have played in the creation of the music we love.”

- Giles Martin, Producer: June 2023
